In the workshop, we will be exploring the fluidity of identity and Its ability to hold tight to one persona and ability to then slip into another. We will be experimenting with the practice of transformation: How can the voice metamorphosis, or the body, from man to woman, and vice versa? What is the impact that these actions hold towards the space and towards the observer? What is in between the binary social and physical representation of the body?
We will be practicing the use of energy as a means to generate tension between bodies, seeing the body as an occupied entity of the self. Mapping areas where the sense of presence and connection between the exterior and interior autonomy happens. Working with scales of energy, constructing and deconstructing bodily volumes and morphing as a means to play with intention, directions and statements.
For inspiration and fun, we will be working with popular cultural musical references and counter references from Heavy metal, Punk, Techno, Country, and Rap while synthesizing physicality through the social gaze of advertising in the contemporary commercial landscape.
About Gaga movement language
Gaga is a movement language which Ohad Naharin developed over the course of many years and which is applied in daily practice and exercises by the Batsheva Dance Company members. The language of Gaga originated from the belief in the healing, dynamic, ever-changing power of movement, and it continues to evolve today. Gaga is a new way of gaining knowledge and self-awareness through your body. Gaga provides a framework for discovering and strengthening your body and adding flexibility, stamina, and agility while lightening the senses and imagination. Gaga raises awareness of physical weaknesses, awakens numb areas, exposes physical fixations, and offers ways for their elimination. The work improves instinctive movement and connects conscious and unconscious movement, and it allows for an experience of freedom and pleasure in a simple way, in a pleasant space, in comfortable clothes, accompanied by music, each person with himself and others.
