Workshop information

Speaking while Moving

 Workshop description:

Increasingly, contemporary choreographers are asking dancers to include their voice in
performance. This workshop aims to develop your creative skills to bring your speaking voice into a dynamic communication that is authentic, playful and embodied. Developing our breath awareness through actively moving enhances our vocal presence and gives us a way to engage our body awareness. This helps to build an active, inspired dialogue in experiencing and developing our communication skills and creative practice.

We will work with connecting our breath to physical sensation while actively moving in
space. We will engage with sound and language through improvisation opening up the space inside ourselves, in partners and in a shared circle of sound & rhythm. From this sense of physical connection, we will move into interacting with sounds coming from physical gesture and fluctuating rhythms.
Bringing the body into a felt sense of awareness provides fertile ground for bringing our awareness & vocal presence into a whole body experience that supports our capacity to communicate and enhance our presentation skills. Our expression begins to converge & navigate through uncharted territory refreshing our relationship to our creativity and aliveness.

Please bring a short text of 3 or 4 lines that inspires you to move, feel and
express.

Patricia Bardi is an independent dance/voice artist, educator, researcher, bodywork specialist, licensed natural health practitioner (BATC) & somatic movement educator/therapist (ISMETA) originally from New York and based in Amsterdam. Patricia is the director of the accredited certification program - VMI Somatic Practice combining Vocal Dance, Voice Movement Integration (VMI) Practice and Vital Movement Integration (VMI) Bodywork which she founded over 20 years ago, centered in Amsterdam. Bardi has toured extensively, teaching and performing at international festivals, universities and theatre schools throughout Europe, North America, Japan and India. She has received a London Arts Choreographer Award and conducted research on North Indian vocal music in India sponsored by the Arts Council of Great Britain. She is a founding member of the School for Body-Mind Centering (USA) and London’s Chisenhale Dance Space. She also founded the Rocca Project an annual summer program for interdisciplinary performance arts and integrative somatic practice in Tuscany, Italy. Recently she presented her research on voice & movement at London’s Royal Central School of Speech & Drama and the Netherlands National Center of Performing Arts, Arnhem.
In her work, she combines vocal expression with physical movement to deepen
awareness and awaken perception in ways that foster transformation. Sound making as a physical process can facilitate a fuller understanding of oneself and open our powers of expression and response. Developing our body presence through actively using breath and movement informs our sense of awareness in how and what we want to communicate.
